Before you attend any job interview, make a list of your personal and professional experience, interests and abilities that relate to the position. For example, if you’re applying for an upper-level management position in a hotel and you have 10 years of service as a front desk administrator in a large hotel, list the skills and qualities you possess that helped you succeed. If you won any awards related to hospitality or management, list them. In addition, think of as many relevant, personal examples as you can to relate to the interviewer and convince him that you are the best person for the job.

If you’ve consistently been working your way up the career ladder, it makes sense that you would want to continually acquire positions that are more advanced. Know what your short- and long-term goals are before you meet with the interviewer. A common interview question is “Where do you see yourself in five years?” Know the answer. If you’re interviewing for a position that offers opportunities for advancement, you can say that you’d like to acquire a position like the one for which you’re interviewing, learn new skills and benefit the company. Then, state that when the time is right, you see yourself moving on to more challenging opportunities within the same company to let the interviewer know you are looking for long-term opportunity. It’s important to be confident about your decision to pursue the job. It shows the interviewer you are a serious candidate.
Identify Something That Sets You Apart From Others
If you want an edge in a job interview that will enable the employer see you as the best man for the job, then you must identify something about yourself that makes a positive impression on the interviewer. For instance, if you are applying for a job as the director of a nonprofit organization and you have experience as a director for a public organization, you possess a majority of the qualifications for the position. If you spent five years in college working as a volunteer and intern for various nonprofit agencies in a variety of positions, you still have an advantage over many of the other candidates. Or if you manage your own successful nonprofit agency, you have a distinct advantage.
Focus on the job description and construct your answer to detail how well your experience, skills, abilities and personality fit that position. For example, you could say “You’re looking for someone who has a proven track record in managing a successful sales team. I have seven years of experience managing a sales team that was underachieving when I joined them, and within six months every person on the team was selling 30 to 60 percent more than company expectations. My team sustained their performance throughout the entire time I continued managing them, even when new team members came on board. I know I can do the same thing here.”
Imagine that a potential partner would propose to you while saying:”Well, I have some doubts that you can ever be a fitting partner, but nevertheless consider my proposal.” Would you say yes? What about your self-respect? Reading between the lines matters a lot.
The same is valid for the perfect proposal in the corporate world, make sure you truly value the company you wish to work for and respect them for what they represent. A highly valued and genuine proposal will always lead to mutual benefits and creates a wonderful win-win situation.
