National Universities Commission (NUC) has cautioned Vice Chancellors of Nigerian universities to desist from parading themselves as chief executive officers.
This was stated by the newly-appointed Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Abubakar Abdulrasheed, on Wednesday, August 3.
Abdulrasheed, who resumed office on Wednesday, said that some vice-chancellors had been addressing themselves as chief executive officers, a nomenclature, which he said, does not apply to the university system.
“This is one of the crises in the university system. We don’t have chief executive in the university system. Some vice-chancellors address themselves as chief executive officers but they are not”, said the NUC boss who was Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano.
The executive secretary, who promised to continue with the policies set by his predecessor, Prof. Julius Okojie, said he would do his best.
He, however, called for support from all employees of the commission towards achieving a success, noting that “he cannot do it alone.”
In a related development, the newly-appointed Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). Dr. Abdullahi Bichi Baffa, also assumed office on Wednesday.
Speaking while meeting with the management employees, he said he was mandated to end impunity in the system.
