The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah, has directed all federal Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education in the country to hook up with the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN).

Adamu gave the directive at the opening ceremony of EBSCOP Host Capacity Development Workshop for Nigerian Universities in Abuja.

NgREN is the national research network for Nigeria, established to provide connectivity infrastructure and service layers for innovation in teaching and research in the country.

He said the ministry would no longer condone a situation where institutions collect from the Federal Government and individually incur higher costs when a cheaper alternative like the NgREN was available.

“We have directed that every Nigerian tertiary institution should move their connectivity and services to the NgREN immediately,” he stated.

Anwuka noted that the Federal Government has also directed the National University Commission (NUC) to immediately commence the identification of other sources of information and facilitate their availability to the Nigerian university system to make it more globally competitive.

“In the light of this, NUC should work closely with key agencies like the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and others to ensure that we build and sustain an excellent information base for Nigerian tertiary institutions.

He charged universities and other educational institutions in the country to continue to take advantage of facilities at their disposal to enhance the quality of their performances and delivery.

In his address, the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, explained that the workshop was organised to sensitise and train the participants on the use of the EBSCO eBook Academic Collection.

“In a nutshell, this training is meant to enhance the quality of research and teaching methods in the universities.
