The Federal Government of Nigeria under the leadership of Mr. President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR), had conceived the idea that each of the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory ought to have a Federal University. In line with that, twelve new Federal Universities were to be established in those states that did not have Federal Universities. On 16th February, 2011 nine new Federal Universities were established.
The establishment of the remaining three Universities was, however, deferred until 18th February, 2013 when Mr. President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR) announced the establishment of Federal University, Birnin Kebbi alongside those of Gusau and Gashua. Professor Lawal Sulaimaan Bilbis, a Professor of Biochemistry and former Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic at the Usman Danfodiyo University Sokoto was appointed as the Pioneer Vice Chancellor of the University while Ibrahim Abubakar Mungadi was appointed as the Registrar.
The Federal University Birnin Kebbi is located in Birnin Kebbi, the capital city of Kebbi State in the North-West Geo-Political Zone of Nigeria.
