  • The deadline for scholarship applications is 16:00 (UK time) on Friday 26th April 2019.
  • Scholarship results will be announced by 16:00 (UK time) on Friday 31st May 2019.

How do I know if I’m eligible for the scholarship?

  • To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must be a national of or permanently domiciled in one of the following:
    • East and South Africa: Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Mauritius
    • Middle East and North Africa: Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt, Sudan, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco
    • South East Asia: Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam
    • Hong Kong, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Japan, S. Korea, Norway, Turkey
  • You must receive an offer to study a full-time or part-time undergraduate programme at the University of Sheffield by 19 April 2019.
  • Your programme must be scheduled to commence at the University of Sheffield in September 2019.
  • You must receive an offer for a course studied in full at the University of Sheffield. All undergraduate degree courses are eligible with the exceptions of Medicine (A100/A101) and Dentistry (A200).
  • For tuition fee purposes you must be self-funded and eligible to pay the overseas tuition fee.
  • You must not be a sponsored student*.
  • You must enter a degree programme at the University of Sheffield in programme year 1 or year 2.
  • For scholarship purposes all MArch programmes are considered as postgraduate taught programmes and are not eligible for this or any other undergraduate scholarship.
  • The University of Sheffield reserves the right to review and change scholarship provision.

How to Apply for the Programme:

A link to the online scholarship application will be sent by email to all eligible students from January onwards. First apply for admission into any of the school’s Undergraduate programs by Friday 19th April 2019.

University of Sheffield Postgraduate Taught Merit Scholarship Details and FAQs

The University of Sheffield is delighted to offer 100 International Postgraduate Taught Merit Scholarships in 2019. Each scholarship is a competitive award worth 25% of the original tuition fee for a postgraduate taught programme starting in September 2019.

How do I know if I’m eligible for the scholarship?

  • You must hold an offer to study a full-time or part-time postgraduate taught course before 16:00 (UK time) on Friday 19 April 2019.
  • You must accept an offer to study a full-time or part-time postgraduate taught programme at the University of Sheffield before 16:00 (UK time) on 26 April 2019.
  • Your programme must commence at the University of Sheffield in September 2019.
  • Distance learning courses are ineligible for a merit scholarship.
  • You must receive an offer for a course studied in full at the University of Sheffield. Masters programmes split between the University of Sheffield and a partner institution are not eligible to apply for a scholarship.
  • All Crossways courses and Erasmus Mundus courses are ineligible for a merit scholarship.
  • For tuition fee purposes you must be self-funded and required to pay the overseas tuition fee.
  • You must not be a sponsored student*.
  • For scholarship purposes all MArch programmes are considered as postgraduate taught programmes and are not eligible for undergraduate scholarships.
  • Anyone studying a Masters/integrated PhD programme is eligible for a merit scholarship in the Masters element of the programme only.
  • These scholarships are not applicable to any postgraduate courses where the higher clinical fee is applicable, this includes, but is not exclusive to the following courses in the Programme Webpage Link below.

In partnership with the University of Sheffield Africa Scholarship Trust, the Department of Geography are pleased to offer a scholarship for a postgraduate taught student from Africa.

Field of Study:

You must have applied to study on one of the following courses to study at the University of Sheffield, starting in September 2019:

  • MA International Development
  • MSc Environmental Change and International Development
  • MPH International Development

What is the category of this opportunity?

Masters

How do I know if I’m eligible for the scholarship?:

  • You must be classified as overseas for tuition fee purposes.
  • You must be self-funded to receive this award, i.e. not funded by a research council, government, private enterprise, charity or any similar organisation.
  • This scholarship cannot be awarded in conjunction with any other funding awards, either from the University of Sheffield or external sources.
  • Your mode of attendance must be full time.
  • Receipt of the scholarship is subject to successfully meeting any condition(s) attached to your offer before the deadline provided by the Admissions Service.
  • Receipt of the scholarship is subject to successfully receiving a visa to study at the University in September 2019.
  • You must be a national of or permanently domiciled in an African country.

What are the selection criteria?

The panel will be looking to see in particular if you have:

  • provided a clear rationale for applying for a postgraduate course at the University of Sheffield,
  • outlined challenges to academic progress and detailed how these barriers have been overcome successfully,
  • outlined examples of work experience in the field of International Development,
  • clearly articulated future ambitions; these goals relate to the postgraduate degree you have applied for, and how your learning will benefit others from your country.

The outcome of your application will be announced via email.
