The Janaki Ammal Scholarship is aimed at those students in receipt of some external funding. So, students must be able to provide evidence of additional funding to cover living costs (e.g. RCUK level is £14,553 in the 2017/18 academic year) and the residual Home/EU level of tuition fee (e.g. £4,195 for the 2017/18 academic year).

Applications are welcome from students wishing to study any aspect of plant and microbial sciences the John Innes Centre is currently engaged in.

The John Innes Centre offers Janaki Ammal Scholarships to overseas postgraduate research students, who are nationals of eligible developing countries, to help enable them to study for a PhD degree at our institute.

How do I know if I’m eligible for the scholarship?

To receive a Janaki Ammal Scholarship while studying at the John Innes Centre, candidates must:

  • Have completed and submitted all relevant sections of a formal application online at the University of East Anglia (UEA) with all supporting documents for a full-time PhD research degree programme at the John Innes Centre with a primary supervisor who is a Project Leader at the John Innes Centre. No separate application for the Janaki Ammal Scholarship is required
  • Have completed the Research Statement on the application form and ensured two academic references are provided
  • Have been shortlisted by the prospective supervisor and interviewed in person or by video conference by that supervisor, another Project Leader and the Postgraduate Research Director from the John Innes Centre
  • Be in subsequent receipt of an offer of admission to register at UEA on a PhD research degree programme (other than DTP, iCASE and Rotation Programmes)
  • Be liable to pay the Overseas UEA lab-based postgraduate research tuition fee (i.e. be assessed as Overseas for fee status purposes)
  • Be a national of one the developing countries listed below
  • Not hold any other scholarship or award that will cover the cost of the Overseas tuition fee
  • Have met all conditions for admission to the UEA before admission

Applications are invited for the University Of East Anglia International Excellence Scholarship program which is awarded to International students who are looking to acquire a degree program at University Of East Anglia, UK (UEA). This scholarship program is created to reward academically outstanding applicants who have been offered a place to study with UEA.

How many awards are available?

The scheme consists of 50 prizes.

What is the value of the program? 

  • Vice Chancellor’s Prizes – awards of 50% of the tuition fee for each year of study that you are a registered student on the original course you applied for.
  • International UG Prizes – awards of 25% of the tuition fee for each year of study that you are a registered student on the original course you applied for. If your scholarship includes a year abroad or a year in an industry where you may pay reduced tuition fees for that year, your scholarship award will be lowered to be proportional to those lower tuition fees for that year. Scholarship holders remain liable for paying any remaining tuition fees to UEA.

  • be classified as an international fee-paying student
  • hold either a conditional or unconditional offer for year 1 of study on an undergraduate degree course at UEA

To be eligible for these scholarships candidate must:

  • Be classified as an international (usually non-EU resident) applicant for fees purposes.  See our fees and funding page if you are unsure of your fee status.
  • Hold a conditional or unconditional offer for year 1 of an undergraduate degree course starting at UEA in September 2018.
  • Be independently funding your studies – i.e. students fully sponsored by organisations for their tuition fees are not eligible to apply (Students applying for or expecting to receive government loans are eligible to apply).
  • Applicants to courses in Norwich Medical School Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy are not eligible to apply.

How many students will be awarded?

50 students will be given the scholarship award.

Scholarships are awarded in amounts of 25% or 50% of your tuition fees and are deducted on a yearly basis from your tuition fees.
