Scholarships are a common source of funds for students and it is not a new idea. A lot of international institutions give out international scholarships to patronize patronage and students leverage these scholarships to pursue their academic dreams.

Here is a list of top 10 scholarships for African International students in no particular order:

1. MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program for Africa

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is a $500 million, 10-year initiative to educate and prepare young people – particularly from Africa – to lead change and make a positive social impact in their communities. The Scholars Program provides young people from economically disadvantaged communities who have demonstrated academic talent and leadership potential with access to quality and relevant education. The Program serves an estimated 15,000 young people at the secondary and university levels.

2. Rhodes Scholarships at Oxford University for International Students

The Rhodes Scholarships are postgraduate awards supporting exceptional all-round students at the University of Oxford. Established in the will of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, the Rhodes is the oldest and perhaps the most prestigious international scholarship program in the world. A Rhodes scholarship covers all University and College fees, the university application fee, a personal stipend for living expenses (£13,658 per annum 2014-15), and economy class airfare to and from Oxford at the commencement and conclusion of the scholarship.

3. Westminster Full International Scholarships (UK)

The University of Westminster offers international scholarships for students from developing countries including middle-income countries who wants to pursue a full-time  undergraduate degree at the University. Full tuition fee waivers, accommodation, living expenses and flights to and from London. The scholarship will be renewed each year, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

4. Lund University Global Scholarships for Non-EU/EEA Students (Sweden)

The Lund University Global Scholarship Programme is targeted at top academic students who are citizens of countries from outside the European Union/European Economic Area (and Switzerland) and who wish to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree studies offered at the University.  Scholarships may cover 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% of the tuition fee.

5. Eldred-Waverley Scholarship at Linacre College

The Eldred-Waverley Scholarship at Linacre College was established in 2012. It funds students from sub-Saharan Africa to study the MSc African Studies at Oxford. The scholarship will cover 100% of University and college fees, a grant for living costs (of at least £10,397) and a return flight from your home country to UK. Awards are made for the full duration of your fee liability for the agreed course.

6. Sydney Achievers International Scholarships (Australia)

The Sydney Achievers International Scholarships aims to attract high achieving, academically meritorious, international students to study at University of Sydney in Australia. Each scholarship has a value of AUD$10,000 per annum for any undergraduate program offered at the University of Sydney.

7. American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (USA)

The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is targeted to high-achieving international students who are dedicated to positive civic and social change and who wish to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree offered at the American University. It is intended for students who will be to returning home to improve under-resourced, underserved communities in his/her home country.  The AU EGL scholarship covers full tuition and room & board.

8. Fulbright Foreign Student Program in USA

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program enables graduate students, young professionals, and artists from abroad to research and study in the United States for one year or longer at U.S. universities or other appropriate institutions. Generally, the grant funds tuition, airfare, a living stipend, and health insurance, etc. The Fulbright program provides funding for the duration of the study.

9. Monash University International Merit Scholarships (Australia)

Monash University is offering a number of scholarship programs including the Monash University International Merit Scholarships for outstanding international students who wish to pursue an undergraduate degree programme offered at Monash University.  The scholarship is valued at $10,000 for a full time study load paid per year.

10. Australia Awards in Africa

Australia Awards, a cornerstone of the Australian Government’s development assistance program for Africa, provide access to postgraduate education, training and professional development opportunities for suitably qualified Africans from eligible countries. On their return to the workplace, Australia Awards Alumni are expected to contribute actively to development in their home countries. Award types include: Australian Awards Scholarships, to undertake higher degree studies in Australia at Masters level and the Australia Awards – Africa Fellowships, to undertake short-term, targeted professional training courses, in Australia and/or in Africa, in a range of development-focused sectors.
