The KGSP (Korean Government Scholarship Program) is a scholarship program sponsored by the NIIED (National Institute for International Education) and designed to provide higher education in Korea for international students in the aim of promoting international exchange in education and mutual friendship amongst the participating countries.  

When is the application deadline?

20th March 2019

Each embassy and university will send the 1st round successful candidates’ applications and related documents to NIIED by April 4th, 2019.

How do I know if I’m eligible for the scholarship?

-Be non-Korean citizens whose parents are also non-Korean citizens*.
-Be physically and mentally healthy-Be under 40 years of age as of September 1st, 2019
-Hold a bachelor’s or an equivalent degree prior to August 31st, 2019
-Have a GPA higher than B or 80% from the previously attended institution
*Applicants must be from designated countries (see NIIED application guideline)

The Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) is offered to international students who want to pursue Bachelors, Masters and PhD degrees in Korean Universities. The scholarship is aimed to provide international students with an opportunity to conduct advanced studies at higher educational institutions in Korea, to develop global leaders and strengthen Korea-friendly networks worldwide.

Korean government invites 780 international students from 156 countries, for degree(Master’s & Doctoral) and non-degree research programs in Korea through the Korean Government Scholarship.

When is the application deadline?

Applicants submit their applications either to the Korean Embassies around the world or to the partnering universities in Korea.Applications (Embassy, University) are expected from:

  • Graduate: 1st February 2019 to 11th March 2019
  • Undergraduate: September 2019 to October 2019 (To open in September 2019)

How do I know if I’m eligible for the scholarship?

To be eligible for the Korean Government Scholarship:


  • Candidates and their parents must hold non-Korean citizenship.


  • KGSP-G: under 40
  • KGSP-U: under 25


  • Candidates must be physically and mentally healthy for their studies in Korea.

Degree Requirements

  • KGSP-G: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
  • KGSP-U: High school diploma


  • The cumulative grade point average (CGPA) must be 80% or higher; or
  • The CGPA must be 2.64/ 4.0, 2.80/ 4.3, 2.91/ 4.5, or 3.23/ 5.0 or higher.

How many scholarships are available?

  • KGSP Undergraduate: around 170 grantees will be awarded annually
  • KGSP Graduate: around 800 grantees will be awarded annually

Scholarship Benefits:

Flight | Tuition | Stipend | Medical Insurance | Settlement Allowance | Completion Grants

The Korean Government Scholarship will cover most of the following expenses:

  • Airplane ticket or airfare: The grantees will receive an airplane ticket or be paid an economy class airfare of the shortest route between their country and Korea when they come to Korea, and, thereafter, when they leave Korea after the completion of their study.
  • Monthly Stipend: about 800,000 won per month.
  • Tuition: The tuition fee up to 5 million won is exempted by the Korean Government, and if any, the tuition fee exceeding 5 million won and the entrance fee for the first semester by the host university.
  • Settlement Allowance: about 200,000 won upon arrival.
  • Repatriation Allowance: about 100,000 won upon completion of studies
  • Korean Language Training Expenses: The full costs up to 1 year (NIIED pays directly to the language training institution)
  • Medical Insurance: The grantees will be provided with health insurance for major accidents and illnesses during their scholarship period.
  • The grantee who has level 5 or higher in TOPIK will receive about 100,000 won per month after being enrolled at a university in his/her higher degree.

Selection Procedure:

1st Selection

Applicants submit their applications either to the Korean Embassies around the world or to the partering universities in Korea. The embassies and universities select the successful candidates among the applicants in the 1st round of selection. The applicants of the successful candidates will then be forwarded to NIIED

2nd Selection

The NIIED selection committee selects the successful candidates among those who passed the 1st round.

3rd Selection

Among the successful candidates who have passed the 2nd round, the applications of those who applied through the Korean Embassies will be reviewed by universities for admission. Successful candidates must get admission from at least one of the universities.

Duration of Scholarship:

  • 1 year Korean language course +2 year Associate degree
  • 1 year Korean language course + 4 year Bachelors degree
  • 1 year Korean language course+ 2 years of Master’s degree
  • 1 year Korean language course + 3 years of Doctoral degree

How to Apply for the Korean Government Scholarship


Submission of required documents, applicants should contact the appropriate Korean Embassy (or Korean Education Center) in the country of applicant’s origin (or in the neighboring country) or the designated regional university, the organization in charge of the 1st round of selection.

To be selected as a KGSP grantee, any applicant should successfully pass through the 1st selection process set by the Korean embassies of his or her origin.

So to apply for the program, please contact the 1st selection organizations to get detailed information on the 1st selection process such as application deadline and required documents, etc.

Applicants can only apply for the Korean Government Scholarship through the Korean Embassy in their home country or a participating Korean University.

    1. Uju, you can visit the KGSP website for more details. And you can apply to the school before or after, whichever way you choose. If you do not go through the university, you would have to apply through the embassy.

    Sorry for much questions. I know of toefl but that of topik, according to my research i didn't find it to be an exam written in Nigeria. How can I get to register for it?

    1. Ayomide, you're right about TOPIK. For now, the exam cannot be taken in Nigeria. However, you can apply with your English proficiency certification first. With that, if you are successful, you can take TOPIK in Korea.

    1. Ayomide, you need to take examinations that will certify that you are proficient in English and Korean languages.

    1. Afoma, yes, a personal statement can be used in place of self introduction. And KGSP requires the certificate of Korean language proficiency as a mandatory document.

    1. Ayomide, you can apply for the scholarship. I understand that distance is an issue and unfortunately, many interested candidates are also far from the Korean embassy or consulates in Nigeria. The only thing I can recommend is that you see if you can find a friend or relative that stays in a place like Abuja to help you forward your relevant application documents to the embassy.

    1. Anthony, the relevant documents include documents like transcript, self-introduction, study plan, certificates of language proficiency (Korean and English), recommendations, published papers and awards, etc.
      Also, the scholarship is from South Korea.

    1. Chiamaka, as long as you satisfy their criteria, you can apply. The only document you might not be able supply is transcript since you won't be applying for a graduate scholarship.
      In your study plan, you are to state the reason you've chosen a Korean university and department (or major), your academic goals, specific plans (including timeline) to achieve them, and future plan after completion of your study.

    1. James, the required documents are your transcript, self-introduction, study plan, certificates of language proficiency (Korean and English), recommendations, published papers and awards as well as any other document you believe to be relevant to your application.

    1. Jimmy, I'm sorry but the KGSP requires your certificate of language proficiency as a proof that you are indeed fluent enough in the language.

    1. Boakai, I'm sorry but I don't know of any embassy or consulate that represents South Korea in Liberia.
      You might have to go through the domestic university in South Korea you are interested in. That's the only other option. Send your application to the school indicating your interest in the KGSP scholarship.

      Dear, I have done my undergraduate in Agriculture major Soil Science. I am a fresh student and I don't have English proficiency. My CGPA is 2.68. Can I apply for the Graduate program?

    2. @Dost Jan, you can apply for the Graduate Program if you are willing to take an internationally recognized English Language exam such as IELTS or TOEFL as a proof for your English Proficiency.
