The MMMF provides grants to women from developing countries to help further their education and strengthen their leadership skills to improve the lives of women and children in developing countries. The MMMF has been offering scholarships since the year 1981.

The MMMF is offering scholarships for women from developing countries who are currently studying in the United States or Canada. The MMMF awards grants are approximately $12,000 each. The MMMF also typically invites the recipients to Washington DC to participate in a three day Awards Program organized in their honor.

Applications are currently ongoing for the 2016/2017 MMMF Scholarship in US & Canada. The 2016-2017 Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) scholarship applications for female students from Developing Countries who are currently studying in the United States or Canada

Criteria for Eligibility:

A woman is eligible to apply for an MMMF grant if she meets all the following criteria:

  • Has a record of service to women and children and a commitment to improve the lives of women and children in developing countries
  • Resides in the U.S. or Canada at the time she submits the application
  • Be enrolled in an accredited educational institution in the US or Canada for the full academic year in which the application is submitted and intend to be enrolled for the subsequent year covered by the grant.
  • Will use the grant toward the completion of her degree
  • Is a national of a lower or middle income developing member country, as designated by the MMMF Country Eligibility List (see list below)
  • Is not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, permanent U.S. resident or Canadian Landed Immigrant
  • Intends to return to her country (or other developing country) within two years of completing use of the MMMF grant and perform at least two years of service
  • Demonstrates financial need and satisfactory academic performance
  • Be at least 25 years of age by the relevant application deadline
  • Is not related to a World Bank Group staff member or his/her spouse

Approximately $12,000 per scholarship recipient.

The grant is a onetime award to last for the duration of study

Application Procedure/Instructions:

IMPORTANT: Before Starting the Application, Please Read the Guidelines Carefully.

Eligible students are those from developing countries studying at an accredited university in the United States or Canada.

To submit your application, you must have a valid email address and register to access the application form.  If you already have a registered user account, please click here to start your application or access your saved application form.

 Before you start the application process make sure you have the following documents in digital (the scans must be in the following formats: pdf – preferred, jpeg or png) form:

  1. Passport ID page with a clear photo;
  2. 2. Visa page in current passport; 
  3. Second passport page with clear photo (in case of dual citizenship);
  4. Most recent proof of registration from your university; and
  5. Most recent university transcripts and/or reports.

You also need:

  1. a verified email addresses for the nominated referees; this will be used to send a reminder, if necessary, for their recommendation. You should of course personally discuss this request with your referees and direct them to the recommendation form on the website before submitting their name on this applicationClick here to download recommendation form.
  2. a summary of your thesis (if applicable), including its objective, methodology, findings and relationship to career goals. (up to 480 words)
  3. brief paragraphs of your personal story, commitment to women and children, course of study and future career plans motivating your commitment to women and/or children (up to 1050 words)
  4. an understanding of your financial situation for the coming academic year and strategies to cover your funding needs.
