Question

From the alternative provided in the question below select the one which is most appropriately completes the sentence:
I was still sleeping when the national news ________ this morning

Options

A) were broadcast

B) were broadcasted

C) was broadcast

D) was broadcasted

E) were being broadcasted

The correct answer is C.

Explanation:

The reason why 'was broadcast' is the answer is that the noun 'news' is uncountable and uncountable nouns usually go with singular verb. Was is the past tense of is which are both singular verbs while were is the past tense of are which are both plural. As a grammatical law of concord, a singular subject goes with a singular verb while a plural subject goes with a plural verb.

To an extent, I'd agree with you.
But I think "was broadcasted" is a more suitable option.
Since the event seems to have already happened.
So the past tense of "broadcast" which is "broadcasted" should be used instead.
This is just a suggestion. I stand corrected .
    Thank you.

  • "Broadcast" doesn't have a past tense, broadcast is both the past and present tense,so I think broadcast is the answer
    This is my opinion

  • Was broadcasted.

  • oh,no i definately agree to WAS BROCAST

  • Both 'was broadcast' and 'was broadcasted' are correct. Broadcasted is now acceptable as the participle form of broadcast. Hence, I'm of the opinion that one of this shouldn't be among the options provided. Check for the past tense and past participle form of broadcast in connection with news.

Both was and were are past tense of 'is' and 'are' respectively, singular subject demands a singular verb. Its a simple past tense, so was and broadcast are used.
